December 2, 2007 First Sunday in Advent

 
Isaiah 2:1-5
Prophet Isaiah speaks of a coming time when God "shall judge between the
nations."
 
Romans 13:11-14
Paul writes to the church at Rome: "You know what time it is."
 
Matthew 24:36-44
Jesus warns his disciples that the time is short, saying that the Lord comes
like a thief in the night.
 
 
December 9, 2007 2nd Sunday in Advent
 
Isaiah 11:1-10
Isaiah tells of a day when a righteous king shall rule, establishing justice
and peace for all the world.
 
Romans 15:4-13
Paul proclaims to the Romans the hospitality and gracious-ness of God in
Jesus Christ.
 
Matthew 3:1-12
John the Baptist announces the advent of God's Messiah.
 
 
December 16, 2007 Third Sunday in Advent
 
Isaiah 35:1-10
Isaiah foresees a time when "the desert shall rejoice and blossom" as the
whole creation beholds "the majesty of our God."
 
James 5:7-10
The letter of James urges patience as the church awaits the coming reign of
God.
 
Matthew 11:2-11
John, in prison, sends his disciples to ask if Jesus is the long-awaited
Messiah.
 
 
 
December 23, 2007 Fourth Sunday in Advent
 
Isaiah 7:10-16
Isaiah foretells of the coming of God's peace in the form of a baby born to
a young woman.
 
Romans 1:1-7
Paul opens his letter to the Romans with an acclamation of the grace of God
in Christ.
 
Matthew 1:18-25
Matthew tells of the birth of Jesus.
 
 
December 30, 2007 First Sunday after Christmas
 
Isaiah 63:7-9
Isaiah sings of "the gracious deeds of the Lord."
 
Hebrews 2:10-18
The graciousness of God in Christ where God came to humanity and identified
with human need in the incarnation.
 
 
Matthew 2:13-23
Warned in a dream, the "holy family" flees to Egypt, where Mary, Joseph and
baby Jesus become refugees there.

Luke 6: 20-31 The Golden Rule
 
 
 
November 11 23rd Sunday after Pentecost
 
Psalm 145 1-5
It is possible that the psalter originally ended with this one. To repeat
this psalm is to confess that we are insufficient, and that God is
sovereign.
 
2 Thessalonians 2:1-5, 13-17
Paul, a believer that Jesus was about to return back to the earth for the
faithful, urges the church to hold fast to the gospel traditions he shared
with them.
 
Luke 20: 27-38. A group of Sadducees attempt to trap Jesus into a violation
of the rigid Law of Moses concerning the marriage of a widow.
 
 
November 18 24th Sunday after Pentecost
 
Psalm 98 O Sing to the Lord a new song!
 
Isaiah 65:17-25
Isaiah sees a day when there shall be "new heavens and a new earth" in which
there will be peace and rejoicing for the world.
 
2 Thessalonians 3:6-13
Paul urges the Thessalonians to keep alert, keep active, and remain
steadfast during the present time.
 
Luke 21:5-19
Jesus warns his disciples against idle speculation about the future and
urges them to live with confidence in the present age, to see present signs
of distress as God's new creation.
 
 
 
November 25 Christ the King Sunday
 
2 Thessalonians 1:1-4, 11-12:
Paul writes of his prayers for the struggling church in Thessalonica.
 
Luke 19:1-10:
Jesus goes through Jericho and dines at the house of a sinner named
Zacchaeus. The crowd criticizes him for being the "guest of one who is a sinner."

 

October 7 18th Sunday after Pentecost
 
2 Timothy 1:1-14
Paul encourages his younger colleague Timothy to hold tightly to those
things with which God has entrusted him.
 
Luke 17:5-10
When the disciples said to Jesus, "Increase our faith, he told them parables
about the power of faith, even in small doses.
 
 
 
October 14 19th Sunday after Pentecost
 
Jeremiah 29:1, 4-7
The prophet tells the exiles, they are not going home anytime soon, and they
need to make the best of their exile in Babylonia.
 
Psalm 66:1-12 Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth.
 
2 Timothy 2:8-15:
Paul encourages his young coworker Timothy to be "ready for every good
work."
 
Luke 17:11-19:
In the region of Samaria Jesus meets ten lepers. He heals them all, and is
amazed by the gratitude of one.
 
 
 
October 21 20th Sunday after Pentecost
 
Jeremiah 31:27-34
The prophet speaks of that future when God will write the law ot on stone
tablets but upon our hearts.
 
Psalm 119:97-104 Oh, how I love your law!
 
2 Timothy 3:14-4:5
Paul preaches perseverance to young Timothy as he struggles to be faithful
to the gospel.
 
Luke 18:1-8
Don't lose heart: Jesus tells a story about a judge who was harassed by a
persistent widow who refused to take no for an answer.
 
 
October 28 21st Sunday after Pentecost
 
Joel 2:23-32
The prophet Joel celebrates the saving presence of God in Israel.
 
Psalm 65
You crown the year with your bounty.
 
2 Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18
Paul gives thanks that God came and helped him in his time of need.
 
Luke 18:9-14
A pious Pharisee and a hated tax collector go into the temple to pray.

September 9 Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost

Jeremiah 18:1-11
God is the potter; we are the clay.

A plea for Onesimus, the runaway slave.

Luke 14:25-33
Jesus warns the disciples that following him means following him to the
cross.


September 16 16th Sunday after Pentecost


Jeremiah 4:11-12, 22-28
The land shall be desolation; the earth shall mourn.

Psalm 14
The author of this psalm composed this at a time of depravity and sought to draw the people back to their religious roots.

1 Timothy 1:12-17
Christ came to save sinners—of whom I am the foremost.

Luke 15:1-10
The parables of the lost sheep and the lost coin.



September 23 17th Sunday after Pentecost

Jeremiah 8:18–9:1
When no one heeded Jeremiah's warning he cried out: Is there no balm in Gilead? No physician there?

Psalm 79:1-9
An invasion by a foreign power had caused national suffering. And the question was asked: How long will the terror last?

1 Timothy 2:1-7
Offer prayers for those in high positions.

Luke 16:1-13
The parable of the shrewd manager. This story has often been held up as an example of Jesus' humor.



September 30 18th Sunday fter Pentecost

Jeremiah 32:1-3a, 6-15
As Jerusalem was about to fall to the Babylonians, God instructs Jeremiah to buy a plot of land for sale in his home town. This is symbolic in that God intends for them to survive.

Psalm 91:1-6, 14-16
God will raise you up on eagle’s wings.

1 Timothy 6:6-19
At the conclusion of this pastoral letter, the author points out that security is to be found in godliness and contentment, not in wealth.

Luke 16:19-31
The rich man and Lazarus.

 

August 5 10th Sunday after Pentecost

Colossians 3: 1-11 Paul urges Colossians to grasp the fulness of life claimed by Christ.
Luke 12: 13-21 The foolishness of living a life pointed in the wrong directions

August 12 11th Sunday after Pentecost

Isaiah 1: 1, 10-20
Using images of a rebellious child and a sick body, a word of judgment is announced to Israel from God by way of Isaiah.

Psalm 50:1-8, 22-23
The sacrifice God desires is thanksgiving and upright living.

Hebrews 11: 1-3, 8-16
Examples of faith in the face of adversity are lifted up, begining with Abraham and Sarah.

Luke 12: 32-40
Jesus calls for disciples to treasure that which is lasting.


August 19 12th Sunday after Pentecost
Isaiah 5: 1-7
Like a vineyard that has been carefully and lovingly tended but has yielded no harvest, Israel has failed to produce the fruits of God's righteousness

Psalm 80:1-2, 8-19
Care, O God, for the vine you brought from Egypt.

Hebrews 11: 29 - 12:2
The faith we receive through Christ is deeeply rooted in the people of God across the ages.

Luke 12: 49-56
Jesus reminds us the way to the coming reign of God will not be without discord.


August 26 13th Sunday after Pentecost

Jeremiah 1: 4-10
God calls Jeremiah to be a prophet and promises to sustain him.

Psalm 71:1-6
A mighty fortress, a sheltering rock is God.

Hebrews 12: 18-29
Our God is a consuming fire with an unshakeable kingdom.

Luke 13: 10-17
Jesus heals a woman on the Sabbath and a controversy erupts.

Peter receives a vision of God's expansive love.

Psalm 148
All creation, living and inanimate, are called to praise God.

May 13 6th Sunday of Easter - Festival of the Christian Home.

Acts 16: 9-15
The beginning of the Christian mission in Europe. Lydia, a seller of purple goods becomes a follower.

Psalm 67
A simple hymn of praise and thanksgiving.

John 14: 23-29
On the night in which Jesus was betrayed, he promises the gift of the Holy Spirit.


May 20 7th Sunday of Easter

Acts 16:16-34
Paul and Silas, imprisoned for their preaching, convert their jailer and his whole household.

Psalm 97
A psalm that celebrates the sovereign rule of God.

John 17:20-26
At the end of his meal with the disciples, Jesus begins to pray to God, promising that "the glory that you have given me, I give to them."


May 27 Pentecost Sunday

Acts 2: 1-21
The Spirit comes on the Day of Pentecost

John 14: 8-17 25-27
Jesus promises the gift of the Spirit, the Comforter.

The conclusion to the Psalter as a whole, this psalm calls upon every living creature to honor God in worship.

John 20:19-31
Jesus' disciples, hiding behind locked doors, are surprised by a stranger who comes and stands among them.


April 22 3rd Sunday of Easter
Acts 9:1-6, (7-20)
Saul, the church's chief persecutor, is confronted by the risen Christ and becomes the church's great missionary to the Gentiles.

Psalm 30
Possibly used at the feast of dedication (Hannukkah), this is a psalm of thanksgiving praising God for a specific act of deliverance.

Revelation 5:11-14
In a glorious vision of heaven, John sees the Lamb at the center of heaven, the lamb seated upon the throne.

John 21:1-19
The Risen Christ appears to his disciples on the beach and speaks to them of his abiding love for them as well as their responsibility to follow him.

April 29 4th Sunday of Easter
Acts 9:36-43
Tabitha, a generous woman of Joppa who has done much for the poor, dies and is miraculously restored to life.

Psalm 23
In the ancient world. kings were often portrayed as good shepherds or hosts; but the psalmist here declares that God is his shepherd.

Revelation 7:9-17
The curtain is raised in heaven, giving us a vision of heaven where the Lamb sits upon the throne and rules, surrounded by the white-robed elders.

John 10:22-30
Jesus asserts that he and his father are one.

Genesis 15:1-12, 17-18 - The story of God's gracious covenant with Abraham.
Psalm 27 - God is my light and my salvation
Philippians 3:17-4:1 - Paul reminds the Philippians that "our citizenship is in heaven," so live
accordingly.
Luke 13:31-35 - Jesus cries over Jerusalem as a hen over her chicks.

March 11 3rd Sunday in Lent

Isaiah 55:1-9 - The prophet calls Israel to repentance, to change, to return to the covenant
with God.

Psalm 63: 1-8 - I long for you, O God.

1 Corinthians 10:1-13 - God is faithful to us, even in our infidelity, God is faithful, says Paul to
the Corinthians.

Luke 13:1-9 - Jesus tells a parable about a barren fig tree.


March 18

Joshua 5:9-12 - God takes away the shame of Egypt from the people.

Psalm 32 - Blessed are those who are forgiven.

2 Corinthians 5:16-21 - "If anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation," proclaims Paul to the
Corinthians.

Luke 15:1-3, 11b-32 - The beloved parable of the prodigal sons. Others have called this the
parable of the "Waiting Father."


March 25

Isaiah 43:16-21 -"Do not remember the former things," the Lord tells suffering Israel, "I am
about to do a new thing."

Psalm 126 - Those who sow in tears, reap with joy.

Philippians 3:4b-14 - I count everything as loss, but knowing Christ.

John 12:1-8 - Jesus visits at the home of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus.

 

February 4 5th Sunday after the Epiphany
Liturgical Color - Green

Psalm 138
Attributed to David, this psalm expresses gratitude for God’s blessing as well as trust in God’s love and purpose.

Isaiah 6:1-8 (9-13)
At worship in the temple, the young Isaiah is given a stunning vision of God and receives his call to be a prophet.

1 Corinthians 15:1-11
Paul tells the Corinthians how he was called to be an apostle.

Luke 5:1-11
Jesus comes to his disciples while they are fishing, an amazing catch of fish results, and Simon is filled with wonder.


February 11 6th Sunday after the Epiphany

Psalm 1
An introduction to the Book of Psalms.

Jeremiah 17:5-10
The prophet pronounces blessings and curses upon people in Israel based upon how they live with God.

1 CORINTHIANS 15:12-20.
Paul proclaims what the resurrection of Jesus means for all faithful Christians.

LUKE 6:17-26. Jesus descends to the plain and there preaches a sermon in which he pronounces blessings and woes upon those who hear him.


February 18 Transfiguration Sunday
Liturgical Color: White

Psalm 99
This psalm focuses on God's justice. God is praised for guidance throughout Israel's history.

Exodus 34: 29-35
After being on Mount Sinai in the presence of God, Moses' appearance is transformed.

2 Corinthians 3: 12-4:2
Paul interprets the account of Moses' shining face and the veil.

Luke 9: 28-36
While praying on a mountain praying, Peter, James and John witness Jesus' transfiguration.


February 21 Ash Wednesday
Liturgical Color Purple or Gray

Joel 2: 1-2, 12-17
With the warning sound of trumpets, the prophet sounds the alarm that the fearsome Day of the Lord is at hand.

Psalm 51 1-17
A sincere expression of repentance.

2 Corinthians 5: 20b-6:10
Paul shares the difficulties he has experienced carrying out this ministry.

Making a public display of prayer for self-centered reasons is hypocrisy.


February 25 1st Sunday in Lent
Liturgical Color - Purple


PSALM 91:1-2, 9-16
Dependence on God brings protection from evil.

Deuteronomy 26:1-11
Arrived at the promised land, the Hebrews recall the goodness of God.


Romans 10:8b-13
Paul proclaims to the Romans the greatness and graciousness of God's salvation in Christ.

Luke 4:1-13
Jesus ministry begins in the wilderness with temptation.

Luke 6:27-38

Jesus advocates a radical new way of life, one that does not simply modify traditional ethics, but stands it on its head. Instead of "love those who love you and stay away from those who don't," Jesus says, "Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you." Instead of "give generously to those who truly need it," Jesus says, "Give to everyone who begs from you."
In essence, God's people are called to be mPserciful in the same way that God is merciful.

The wedding at Cana - Jesus changes the water into wine.


January 21

Nehemiah 8:1-3, 5-6, 8-10:
Ezra, Nehemiah and a group of Levites read aloud from Torah.

Psalm 19:
A hymn in praise of Torah, joined by all creation.

1 Corinthians 12:12-31a:
Paul reminds the Corinthian church that each one is part of the body of Christ.

Luke 4:14-21: Jesus reads and interprets from the scroll of Isaiah,
announcing that the words he has read are now fulfilled.
